2007-2008 Accelerated Reader Program for 2-S
AR stands for Accelerated Reader. This is a wonderful program that we have at OLA to keep each child challenged in reading at his/her own level. In all grades, this is beneficial in strengthening comprehension skills. AR testing for this year has just begun and will run through May 2007.
The goal for second grade is one AR book, per week, with a score of at least 80%. AR will not count as part of the reading grade in 2nd grade. AR is best seen as a fun way to use the computer and to check reading comprehension. At the end of the school year, an Accelerated Reader Classroom Award will be given in our class to those students who have met the 2nd grade reading goal.
AR books can be checked out of the OLA library during library class. Students who finish an AR book, and return it to the library, may check out another AR book during an appropriate time. AR books are also found at the public library. You will find a list of AR books on the web site; www.olainfo.com. AR books are often signified with a red label or red AR on the cover or binding. At OLA, many of our AR books are notated with a leveled reading level. Students will be encouraged to check out one AR book and one other book during the library class each week. Please remember that there are many excellent books in our library that are not AR.
If your child reads an AR book, have them mark this in the reading log under the AR column. Your child will then be allowed to go to the computer to answer questions about the book. Second graders read the AR test. Teacher help will be given as needed. Students will be given time to test during the literacy block, early morning, and library class. Students who “bug the teacher” or interrupt the class to ask if they can take an AR test will not be allowed to take the test that day. Students who read more that one AR book per week may take the additional test as time allows.
