August 2007 Dear OLA Family,
Welcome to a successful year in second grade! I am Ellen Smith and I will be teaching second grade again this year. Some of the students that are entering second grade this year were in my kindergarten class for the 2005-2006 school year. I am eager to see these familiar faces and welcome new students. Our Guided Reading Program continues in second grade. This program is a major focus at OLA and I anticipate working with each student as they become more fluent readers. I trust that everyone has been reading over the summer and comes to school ready to read. Writing is another major focus in second grade. Students will use the writing process to write in response to reading and write personal narratives. Science and Social Studies are integrated into many of our writing projects This is the fourth year that OLA will be using Everyday Mathematics. This curriculum was developed by the University of Chicago School Mathematics Project as a result of the reform mathematics movement and research done by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. I continue to be excited about this problem-solving approach to teaching mathematics. Our new religion series is Faith First from Resources for Christian Living. As before, each student receives an individual workbook. The text is sequenced to include the Creed, Liturgy and Sacraments, Christian Morality, and Prayer. In second grade we will be learning about the Sacraments of First Reconciliation and First Holy Communion. However, it is very important that you register your child in your home parish to prepare for, and receive, the Sacraments. Our special classes include Physical Education and Healthy Living, Art, Music, Library and Spanish. I have been busy this past week arranging and rearranging furniture in the room and setting up for the first day of school. I await the opportunity to meet each of you on Tuesday, August 21, 2007 at 6:00pm for our Open House and the beginning of a successful 2007-2008 school year.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Ellen Smith
