Fifth Grade Newsletters Fifth Grade News from 4C: 4/21/08 – 4/25/08
Reading:We will read “Breaker’s Bridge” from the 5th grade Anthology this week. We’ll also work on the related skills in our Practice Books. There will be a quiz on Friday, April 25, 2008. Reading Incentive Programs: Book It: Calendar for April is due on 4/30/08 (75 minutes per week) Accelerated Reader: 2 tests due for April by 4/30/08 April Book Report: Non-fiction - choose a book about your European country, and in conjunction with our annual Multicultural Festival, projects will be assigned throughout the month.
English:We will begin Section 8 in Voyages, “Punctuation and Capitalization”. We’ll focus on Lessons 8.1-8.5.
Vocabulary:We will work on the Review Unit 9-12 this week. Extra practice is available on www.sadlier-oxford.com.
Social Studies:We have been working on our Multicultural Week projects. Students were given directions for a “Country Quilt”. Remember to bring your research everyday, you will have time in class to type and illustrate your paragraphs. We are also working on maps of our countries.

Instead of Chapter Tests we will begin working on a culminating project - Revolutionary War ABC Books. Directions and a rubric will be passed out next week. We will also be working on our Multicultural Week projects.

Fifth Grade News from 4C: 3/10/08 – 3/14/08
Reading:We are continuing our novel study Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson. We will continue reading in class as well as at home. Please encourage your child to keep up with the nightly reading assignments. We will be addressing new vocabulary, completing comprehension activities, and responding to several writing prompts. This novel study will fulfill the Monthly Book Report (Historical Fiction) along with 1 AR test requirements for March. Reading Incentive Programs: Book It: Calendar for March is due on 3/18/08 (200 minutes total) Accelerated Reader: 2 tests due for March by 3/18/08, one test will be on Fever 1793 March Book Report: Historical Fiction Fever 1793 – Assignments/Projects will be assigned throughout the unit. English:We will complete the Unit on Adverbs in Voyages pgs. 409-420. There will be a test on Monday 3/18/08. Vocabulary:We will complete Unit 10 this week. There will be a test on Tuesday, 3/11/08. Please review each night. Extra practice is available on www.vocabularyworkshop.com. Social Studies:We will complete Ch. 7 on Wednesday, there will be a take home test due back by Friday. We will conclude this Unit with a group project that we will begin work on in class.
Fifth Grade News from 4C: 3/3/08 – 3/7/08
Reading:We are beginning a new novel study Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson. We will be reading in class as well as at home. Please encourage your child to keep up with the nightly reading assignments. Reading Incentive Programs: Book It: Calendar for February is attached, it will be due on 2/29/08 (75 minutes per week) Accelerated Reader: 2 tests due for February by 2/29/08 February Book Report: Mystery – Book must be approved by 2/14/08. Happy Catholic Schools Week 2008!
Reading:We’ll read Going Back Home from the 5th grade anthology and also work on related skills in our practice books. There will be a quiz on Friday, 2/1/08. Reading Incentive Programs: Book It: Calendar for January is due 1/31/08 (75 minutes per week) Accelerated Reader: 2 tests due for January by 1/31/08 January Book Report: Fantasy – Fiction books that contain elements that are not realistic, such as talking animals and magical powers. Guidelines were sent home last week for the poster which is due on Thursday. English:We will continue working in the Grammar Half of Voyages - Verbs. We’ll focus on L.4.7-4.9 next week. Vocabulary:We will complete Unit 8 together in class. There will be a test on Thursday, 1/31/08. Please encourage your child to study the words each night. Extra practice is available on www.vocabularyworkshop.com. Social Studies:We have begun Ch. 5, we are working on vocabulary and lesson review questions in class. Questions are to be finished for Homework if they are not completed during class time. This week we will focus on Lessons 2-3.

Fifth Grade News from 4C: 12/14/07
Dear Parents, Next week will be filled with various holiday activities. Our schedule will be interrupted by concerts, play practices and special activities. Our tentative plans for the week include: Reading: We will continue our novel study Snow Treasure by Marie McSwigan. All reading and related assignments will be completed in class. Reading Incentive Programs Book It – December calendar is due 12/20/07 (75 minutes per week) Accelerated Reader –1 test (with a passing score of 80%) due by 12/20/07 December Book Report – Free Choice – Revised Guidelines are attached! Bring your clues to school on Monday if you need help with this assignment! Completed Project is due Wednesday, 12/19/07. English: We will complete the Adjectives Section of Voyages, there will be a test on Wednesday, 12/19/07. Social Studies: We will complete Ch 4 next week. We are working on Lesson Vocabulary and Review Questions in class.

Reading: We will complete our novel study In The Year Of The Boar And Jackie Robinson by Bette Bao Lord. We will work on related skills and vocabulary in class. We will also complete several writing activities and special projects. We will finish up by making Book Jackets to represent parts of the novel. Reading Incentive Programs Book It – October calendar is due 11/1/07 (75 minutes per week) Accelerated Reader – 2 tests due by 10/31/07 October Book Report – Biography ( true stories of people from the past or present ) due 10/31/07 – project guidelines have gone home. English: We will continue our poetry unit while also working on Unit 2 – Pronouns, in the Grammar Section of Voyages. We’ll focus on L.2.7-2.8 next week. Vocabulary: We will begin Unit 5 next week. There will not be a test until the week of 11/4/07. Social Studies: We have completed Ch.2 “The Earliest Americans”. We are working on group projects representing various Native American groups. There will be a test on Ch. 2 on Friday, 11/2/07. A study guide will be completed in class.

English: We will continue with Section 1 in the Grammar half of our English Book (Voyages) NOUNS, next week we will focus on Lessons 1.8-1.9 Text pgs. 328-331. Vocabulary: We will complete Unit 2 next week. There will be a test on Wednesday, 9/19/07. The books should be coming home nightly to study. Dear Parents, The following information is being provided as a guide to keep you informed of what we are doing in class. Homework is assigned daily based on what we complete in class and is not included in this newsletter. Please encourage your child to complete any assignments on the attached Missing Work note. This note must be signed and returned to me on Tuesday. Reading: Next week we will be reading The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, Anthology pgs. 46-61 and we will also work on the related skills in our Practice Book. There will be a comprehension quiz on Friday, 9/7/07. Reading Incentive Program: Book It: September Goal – 75 minutes per week September Book Report: Realistic Fiction – stories that take place in modern times. Students are to choose a realistic Fiction book to read during the month of September. The book must be approved by me before next Friday, 9/7/07. There will be a project to complete at home towards the end of the month. I will send home guidelines with next week’s newsletter. English: We will continue with Section 1 in the Grammar half of our English Book (Voyages) NOUNS, next week we will focus on Lessons 1.5-1.7 Vocabulary: We will continue Unit 1.
