Whole Class Enrichment
Kindergarten:
The Kindergarten class finished working on
enrichment activities based around the book Color Farm and
Oodles of Animals by Lois Ehlert.
The students are now beginning to work with deductive
reasoning skills.
Grades 1 - 5:
Students in grades 1 - 5 finished working on a project
using the Creative Problem Solving technique.
Problem: How to keep Mrs.
Bryn's dog, Missy, from walking through the railings of the upstairs banister.
(Missy is an eight year old toy poodle with severe cataracts. In
August, Missy walked through the banister posts and fell 12 feet. Luckily,
she was not seriously injured.)
Student selected possible solutions:
 | Carry Missy up and down the stairs every time.
(This worked well most of the time. However, Missy will go
upstairs on her own in search of Mr. Bryn or the other dogs.) |
 | Drape a sheet over the railing at the top of the
stairs. (This also works well. Missy bumped in the
sheet and stayed away from that area. However, it does not look very
attractive.) |
 | Enclose the railing to make a short wall.
(This would be a workable solution if it weren't so expensive. We did
not attempt this.) |
 | Have her cataracts removed. (I know
that they remove cataracts in humans, I'm not sure if it is done in dogs.
This would be above our dollar limit. Also, Missy has heart issues that
would make surgery a problem for her.) |
 | Put a baby gate in front of the balcony railings.
(This worked well. However it did not look good from downstairs and
the other dogs kept accidentally knocking the gate over.) |
