Home What to Read Birthday Book Accelerated Reader Book Fair

This year OLA has subscribed to Accelerated Reader on the Renaissance Learning web site.  This means we now have access to over 104,840 Reading Practice tests.  In addition to books from the OLA Library, students can also test on books from the public library or their home library.  To find a complete listing of AR books, log on to www.arbookfind.com.

All OLA students are encouraged to participate in the AR program.  All of the fiction chapter books and easy readers now have labels on their spines to facilitate the students in finding a book at their AR level.  The reading teachers have assigned these levels and students will continually be reassessed as they take the AR quizzes.   Please encourage your child to read the required number of AR books and discuss the story with them.  This will help prepare them for the comprehension quiz.  But remember, AR books are not the only ones they can read.  Reading is a pleasure – so choose books that will provide entertainment as well.

AR books are assigned a readability number.  Readability formulas use objective measurement to analyze text and predict which materials can be comprehended by individual readers.  They produce an estimate of a book's difficulty based on selected variables in the text, but none analyzes the suitability of the content or the literary merit for individual readers.  This decision is up to educators and parents, who know best what content is appropriate for each student.  Because a book is identified as an AR book only means we have the corresponding AR quiz for that book.  It does not indicate that the book is superior literary material.
