        Report Cards

Fourth Quarter Progress Reports are issued Thursday, May 1.  The end of the year will be here before we know it.  There is a lot of instruction and learning still to be done.  Help your student stay current on homework and other assignments.  Even though the daylight hours are extended and the weather is more favorable for playing than doing work,  every assignment is important. The last report card will be given out the last day of school, Wednesday, June 4.

        Suggestions for Summer

Of all the activities children participate in during summer break, nothing has the long term effect that reading holds.  Every teacher at OLA will be urging students to read every day.  Practice math skills.  If the multiplication facts aren't mastered for Fourth Grade as of yet....do it over the summer and get a giant step ahead for the year.  Lots of Fourth Grade math depends on fluency in multiplication.  Have a good time, do some relaxing, but use the down time as a way to get ahead next year.  There are many materials to work with from Target to Teacher stores.  Just DO It!!!

If you are considering having your child tested via psychological/educational testing, there is a very good article : Optimizing Assessments Ten Tips for Parents from Dr. Mel Levine .   It can be found at www.allkindsofminds.org.  This is a great web site for information of all kinds on  children who learn differently.

Testing and Reevaluation By Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools have always been available for delays in speech/language, readiness, motor skills, social-behavior, academic and self help skills as part of IDEIA. Steps involved in the process of parents seeking evaluation are:

        - Concerned parents should call CMS school to which the student would be assigned. A parent could also call Exceptional Children intake telephone 980-343-6960.

        - Parents of preschoolers should call the above number for a referral to the preschool IEP team.

        - The IEP team meet with parents to discuss concerns, gather data, and conduct any needed screening.

        - The IEP team obtains written permission for testing, gathers any already completed test reports, and conducts a comprehensive assessment.

        - The IEP team schedules a final conference with the parents to discuss the evaluation results and decide whether or not special education and support services are needed.

CMS requires:

1. The child must be enrolled in CMS schools, even though attending Catholic Schools.

That requires:

1. A copy of the child's birth certificate

2. Proof of residence in Mecklenburg County

a utility bill, tax bill, or other address verification.

DYSLEXIA-NEUROLOGICAL ORIGINS- Taken from the LDAC Newsletter Vol. 16, Issue 1

Using technology to pinpoint the neurological origins of dyslexia, a team of Yale University Researchers has released a study that proves dyslexia is the result of a physical miscommunication within the mind, and not the result of intellectual shortcomings that can be outgrown over time.

Nearly one in five Americans struggles with  dyslexia, which prohibits the mind from recognizing the sound structures of certain words.  The study's findings suggest dyslexia is not a developmental disease that will go away, but a permanent brain disorder that educators must learn to teach to.
